A huge carp weighing nearly 18 kg has been caught in the net of a fisherman in the Meghna river of Bhola. On Saturday morning, the fish weighing 17 kg 700 grams was caught in the river estuary by fisherman Hanif Majhi. Later, it was brought to the Ilisha fish ghat in Bhola Sadar upazila and sold at an open auction for Tk 17,500 to Jamal Company.
Eager locals and buyers gathered at the ghat to see the giant fresh fish. It was informed that the fish will be sent to Dhaka for sale.
Shahabuddin Farazi, president of Bangladesh Krishak Oikkya Foundation, said that the Meghna river is a vast reservoir of fisheries. If fish are given the opportunity to spawn safely during the breeding season and small fish are allowed time to grow, the number of large fish in the river will increase further.
