Allegations arose that thick branches of large mahogany trees were cut to make logs in the name of pruning at Bagherpara Degree College in Jashore. On Saturday, four laborers cut the branches of sixteen mahogany trees from morning till afternoon. Protesting this incident, general students formed a human chain in front of the college campus on Sunday morning.
Students demanded legal action against those involved in cutting the trees. Locals alleged that instead of necessary pruning, a syndicate deliberately cut thick branches to make logs for financial gain.
Meanwhile, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Bhupali Sarkar formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident. The committee has been instructed to investigate on-site and submit a report, and action will be taken according to rules thereafter.
