Embankment collapses in Satkhira due to Cyclone Arnob, flood fears

A severe erosion spanning about 300 feet has occurred on the embankment of the Kholpetua River in the Borntala area of Padmapukur Union under Shyamnagar Upazila, Satkhira, due to the impact of Cyclone Arnob. The erosion, which began on Tuesday night, has washed away a part of the char by the Wapda road, creating fears of inundating vast areas.

Upon receiving the news, Padmapukur Union Chairman Amzadul Islam and Jamaat leader Maulana Riyashad Ali, along with around five hundred people, rushed to the spot. Locals are trying to prevent the erosion on a voluntary basis and with the help of workers by dumping geo-bags urgently.

Authorities have been informed about this sudden erosion in polder 7/2 under the Satkhira Division-2 of the Water Development Board. WDB Executive Engineer Abdur Rahman Tazkia stated that the matter has been taken seriously and preliminary protective work has already started.
